Industrial hemp can be used to produce bioplastics

In the United States of America, the market of industrial hemp raw materials is developing very intensively. Heartland Industries has learned how to produce bioplastic from hemp fiber, World of NAN reports.

The cultivation of industrial hemp provides a long list of possible end-use products. That's why U.S. farmers have begun increasing acreage of the crop.

"My grandfather always said hemp was the most exciting new thing in agriculture since soybeans in the '50s. That gives you some idea of how often such a useful crop comes along. That's why we see a huge growth trajectory for technical hemp in the state," said Justy Helt, a hemp farmer.

Heartland produces hemp bioplastic products for the automotive industry. The production process is quite simple: pellets are made from industrial hemp and then mixed with plastic pellets to make bioplastic. The bioplastic consists of 30% hemp fiber and 70% plastic.

According to the producers, the resulting material saves money, reduces the weight of the final material, as well as preserving productivity and reducing carbon emissions.
