The Kazakhstani people use 90 times less nitrogen fertiliser than Uzbeks do

According to FAO, fertilizer consumption in Kazakhstan is at an extremely low level. Thus, in 2019, domestic farmers used only 1.8 kg of nitrogen fertilizers and slightly less than 1 kg of phosphorus fertilizers per hectare of sown area, while in neighboring Uzbekistan 162.6 kg and 50.9 kg respectively were used per the same area. Meanwhile, phosphate fertilizer production in Kazakhstan increased while nitrogen fertilizer production decreased, World of NAN reports, citing Energyprom.

During January-July 2021 the country produced 255.2 thousand tons of nitrogen and 118 thousand tons of phosphate fertilizers. The production of phosphate fertilizers increased by 4.6%, while nitrogen fertilizers, by contrast, decreased by 0.3%.

According to the results of the first half of the year, domestic producers of phosphate fertilizers covered the demand by 99.5% (against nearly 100% a year earlier). Imports rose by 91.3 times, amounting, however, only to 502.2 tons. The domestic market sold 99.8 thousand tons of phosphate fertilizers - 5.2% more than last year.

Nitrogen fertilizers were in a different situation - Kazakhstani producers covered 46.3% of the demand (47.4% last year). Imports rose by 3.1% to 254,000 tons, the share of imported nitrogen fertilizers rose from 52.6% to 53.7%. The country exported 65.1 thousand tons of nitrogen fertilizers - 21% more than last year. However, domestic sales fell by 1.8% to 407.4 thousand tons.

As the analytical agency noted, the consumption of phosphate fertilizers per hectare in fertile Uzbekistan is 52 times more than in Kazakhstan and nitrogen fertilizers - nearly 90 times more. Armenia used 178.4 kilograms of nitrogen fertilizers per hectare, but only 50 grams of phosphate fertilizers. In Russia, 14 kg of nitrogen fertilizers and 4.9 kg of phosphate fertilizers were used per 1 hectare of cultivated area.
