The Eurasian Economic Commission will develop recommendations for the development of breeding and seed production

The Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission approved a list of crops, for which the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union are critically dependent on imports of seeds and planting material. Based on the received information the EEC will work out recommendations for development of the selection and seed production, as World of NAN reports referring to the press service of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

The document was developed by the agro-industrial block of the Commission taking into account the proposals of experts and authorized bodies of the states of the Union.

"Within the framework of the Strategic directions of development of Eurasian economic integration, the heads of the EAEU states have set us two tasks. Approval of the list of agricultural plants is the first step aimed at identifying the general problem of insufficient seed supply. The second important step in realization of this task will be elaboration of recommendations of the Commission on measures of development of selection and seed production, overcoming of dependence on import of seeds and planting material", - said Artak Kamalyan, Minister of Industry and Agroindustrial Complex of EEC.

The approved list includes a number of crops. These are sugar beet, oil-bearing crops (sunflower, rapeseed, safflower), cereals (corn, winter rye), vegetables and melons, fruit and berries and perennial grasses (alfalfa, Hungarian sainfoin).

At the moment, more than 90% of sugar beet seeds, 60% of sunflower seeds, more than a third of corn and rape seeds are imported to the EAEU market. In 2020, the states of the Eurasian Economic Union bought in third countries, vegetable seeds for more than 140 million dollars, as well as planting material of fruit crops at 64 million dollars.
