Russia may ban the export of original seeds

The State Duma has put forward such an initiative; members of parliament believe that scientific intellectual property is lost when selling the latest super-elite seeds abroad, World of NAN reports with reference to iz.ru.

According to the deputies, in recent years, interest from foreign partners in the achievements of Russian science in the field of selection and seed production has grown significantly. Farmers are especially attracted by varieties included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation. But then foreign farmers produce cheaper elite seeds through reproduction. This is what worries the deputies.

“Convincing evidence of the inexpediency of selling super-elite winter wheat seeds abroad, including to friendly countries, is the fact that third-party buyers cannot purchase super-elite seeds of any crop in any country in the world,” added deputy Eduard Kuznetsov.

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture has not yet made any official statements, but has begun to work on this issue.
