Indian police blocked roads yesterday, February 12, to stop thousands of farmers marching in New Delhi. Their main demand is for higher crop prices, reports World of NAN citing Reuters.com.
India's millions of farmers form a powerful voting bloc and the ruling parties are trying to keep producers on their side. Government ministers will therefore hold a series of meetings with farmers' unions.
"We will act peacefully and our aim is for the government to listen to our demands," said Sarwan Singh, a union spokesman.
The reason for the revolt was attributed to the state government, which has failed to keep its promises to increase support to farmers. The government announces support prices for 20 crops every year to set a benchmark, but government agencies buy only rice and wheat at the support level, benefiting only 6 percent of farmers.
