The EEC began to implement the roadmap for a single market of organic agricultural products

The Eurasian Economic Commission together with the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union began to implement the roadmap, approved by the EEC Council to create a single market of organic agricultural products in the Union, reports the World of NAN, citing the press service of the EEC.

The initiative was the topic of a roundtable "Formation of a single market of organic agricultural products within the EEU" with the participation of deputy ministers of agriculture of EEU states, heads of relevant state agencies and industry business associations, as well as representatives of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN International Food Programme and the Codex Alimentarius Commission, chaired by Minister of Industry and Agro-industry of the EEC Artak Kamalyan.

"The importance of the work on the development of organic agriculture is due to the need to meet the growing demand both in the domestic and in the premium markets of third countries, as well as the implementation of topical international issues to ensure the sustainable development of agriculture and reduce the negative impact on the environment," stated Artak Kamalian.

Today the operation of the common market of organic products of the Union is impeded by a number of factors, experts say. These are the difference of national legislations of EAEU states in terms of requirements for the production, labeling, certification procedures for such products, the accreditation of conformity assessment bodies.

The development of a draft international treaty, planned by the road map, is aimed at resolving these issues, which will eventually ensure the unimpeded circulation of organic products in the EAEU. It also provides for the formation and unification of statistical records of production, import and circulation of organic agricultural products.

Participants exchanged views on development trends in the industry of the Union and third countries, made proposals for the implementation of the roadmap for the formation of a single market of organic agricultural products in the EAEC. The results of the discussions will be the basic guidelines for the preparation of a draft international treaty at the expert level.

According to expert estimates, today the share of areas involved in organic agriculture does not exceed 1% of the total arable land of EAEC, and production is characterized by specialization in raw materials. According to the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture, the annual market volume has already exceeded the mark of 150 billion euros, and in coming years, taking into account the global trend for healthy lifestyles and environmental protection, the growth trend will only increase.
