20 farms from the West Kazakhstan region are asking to remove the export duty on sunflower exports, World of NAN reports with reference to ratel.kz.
Due to growing pressure on the market from Russia and the export duty, farmers are forced to reduce sunflower acreage, as it is no longer profitable to grow the crop.
"This year, according to official statistics, the area planted to oilseeds, specifically sunflower, has decreased by 30%. The point is that we have problems with sales because of this duty. The authorities will make people refuse to plant sunflowers because they are unprofitable," farmer Bekbolat Mukhashev explained.
Sunflower is a crop that requires more care - fertilizer, special equipment, pest control, and seed is more expensive. Therefore, the current price together with the duty discourages farmers from this crop.
"When the price of wheat fell, sunflower was the crop that helped farmers cover losses, but we lost this source of income too because of the actual export ban. The only way out of this situation we see is to eliminate the export duty," concluded Bekbolat Mukhashev.
