Seed peas are best at restoring degraded soils

A team of scientists from INTA-Conicet Salta Argentina analyzed the short-term effects of crops on soil aggregation dynamics. In the trial, the legume vetch sow (sow pea) was actually found to be the best at restoring degraded soil, reports World of NAN.

When annual service crops were included in the short-term experiment, a 30% increase in soil microbiological properties such as microbial functions was obtained. This contributed to adequate restoration of the physical structure of the degraded monoculture soil system.

Overall, the inclusion of service crops such as vetch, oats, milkvetch, triticale and brachiaria during two growth cycles increased aggregate stability by 43% and improved the distribution and spatial arrangement of soil macro- and micro-aggregates by 28%, resulting in increased microbiological activity improving soil fertility.

Vicia sowing proved to be the best alternative to improve the quality and health of degraded monoculture soils and to increase subsequent yields.
