The State once again prevents farmers from earning money

The Interdepartmental Commission on Foreign Trade Policy and Participation in Economic Organizations decided to ban the export of onions for 3 months. This was done to prevent the mass export of onions from Kazakhstan and to stabilize prices, World of NAN reports citing the Ministry of Agriculture.

The rush of demand from other countries for Kazakhstani onions is caused by natural disasters in Pakistan, one of the largest onion producers in Asia and in the world. Floods in this country have provoked a worldwide rise in prices for onions, including the market in our country.

Additional pressure on the cost is also caused by severe frosts in the southern regions of Kazakhstan, as well as in Uzbekistan - where a large volume of products were ruined. Thus, the main producers of onions, now actively import the Kazakh product.

Meanwhile, according to the data of the Bureau of National Statistics, the onion harvest in the country in 2022 was 1.1 million tons. At the same time, Kazakhstani consumers annually consume three times less, an average of 315,000 tons.

According to the data from the akimats, today the confirmed stocks of onions in the country amount to 152.4 thousand tonnes or just 14% of the total volume of last year's crop. These volumes are enough for new harvests, so the export restrictions exclude risks of exporting all the remaining onions from Kazakhstan.

It must be noted that Kazakhstani wholesale prices for onions are still within the range of 150-170 tenge per kilo, while the prices in neighboring Russia and Uzbekistan are set at around 240 tenge. In addition, according to Qaztrade, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have already adopted restrictions on the export of onions in their countries.
