Iran is interested in importing large amounts of Kazakhstani rice. The statement was made during the meeting of the Iranian business delegation with Almaty entrepreneurs at the regional chamber of entrepreneurs, World of NAN reports.
According to the press service of the NCE, the parties discussed cooperation in the trade and economic sphere and establishment of business contacts.
At the meeting, Iran's Vice Minister of Agriculture said that the country has needs that can be met by Kazakhstan. This applies to cereals. For example, Iran's annual need for corn is 8 million tons, about 3.5 million tons of grain, 800,000 to 1 million tons of rice, 4.5 million tons of soybeans.
"Iran's annual need for rice is 3,200,000 tons and production is 2.3 million tons. The rest is imported. We cover the need with rice supplies from Pakistan, India and other countries. We would like to import cereals from a neighboring country," said Alireza Mohajer, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Nurlan Zhumartov, an entrepreneur and founder of Asyldan LLP, noted that it is more difficult to grow long-grain rice varieties in Kazakhstan.
"Such rice varieties have a longer growing season. Kazakhstan grows round-grain varieties of rice, whose vegetation period is 90 days. How do you solve this issue? Are there such varieties suitable for Kazakhstan's climate?", asked the entrepreneur.
The representative of Iran answered that they have the practice of growing seeds in greenhouses, then the sprouts are transplanted to the open ground.
"If entrepreneurs are interested, representatives of companies can come to Kazakhstan and conduct training. We are ready to provide cultivation technologies, from training to providing equipment, seeds and support," replied the representative of the Iranian delegation.
According to the results of nine months of 2022 the trade turnover between Iran and Almaty city has grown from 8 million USD to 118 million USD, twice as much. A meeting of the Joint Commission of the two countries will be held in Astana on January 26-27. It will be attended by the Minister of Agriculture of Iran, which will discuss further cooperation between Kazakhstan and Iran in agriculture.
