Irish livestock producers are putting jackets on calves en masse

Manufacturers of animal jackets have sold thousands of calf blankets in Ireland this season, reports World of NAN.

The reason for the demand is simple - many farms are short of straw and winter temperatures are well below optimum levels for calf growth and development.

For calves to maximize their growth potential, a barn temperature of 15-20°C is required. During winter and very early spring calving, this is impossible to achieve in a conventional barn. That is why calves are usually given a deep bed of straw to keep them warm. Otherwise, body energy that should be directed to growth and weight gain will be diverted to warming and maintaining body temperature.

Experts advise prioritizing the smallest calves when it comes to straw. Experts also recommended putting wood chips under the straw to keep the bedding dry for longer.
