Israel has signed a grain agreement with Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. According to the agreement, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan will give grain and in return will receive advanced technologies in agriculture, as reported by Media.az.
Israeli media reports that the conclusion of this agreement will satisfy all Israeli needs in wheat against the background of the global food crisis and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Reportedly, the deal is long-term and its main purpose was Israel's intention to diversify its sources of wheat.
Israel imports more than 90% of the wheat it consumes each year - mostly for animal feed. The war in Ukraine, and even earlier, the economic consequences of COVID-19 made it much more difficult for Israel to import goods, leading to a sharp rise in commodity prices.
In exchange for wheat, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan will receive advanced agricultural technologies from Israel in the region.
"As part of the vision for food security ... today we are taking another important step toward providing agricultural products, most of which are not produced in Israel. In this time of global uncertainty, many countries are interested in cooperating with us based on common interests. We will continue to create more partnerships between Israel and other countries, thereby ensuring food security for our citizens," said Israeli Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter.
