Experts of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) believe that large-scale land restoration is necessary, World of NAN reports referring to nieuweoogst.nl.
Today, 40% of the planet's territories are affected by agriculture, mining, urbanization and inefficient land and water use. For example, more than 70% of the land is used for food production or sand, oil and gas extraction.
"Modern agriculture has changed the face of the planet more than any other human activity. We urgently need to think about global food systems that cause 80% of the forests to be cut down and 70% of the fresh water of the entire planet to be used to irrigate the fields. Overall, this leads to a loss of biodiversity," said UNCCD Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw.
Negative factors include a growing world population and the energy transition, which means that by 2050 another 11% of arable land could lose its fertility if action is not taken urgently.
"We can do something about land degradation, and it's the cheapest solution to the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. We can solve the problem before 2050, in other words, within a generation. This requires limiting the use of chemical fertilizers and water, as well as reforestation," Ibrahim Thiaw added.
