How is the veterinary system organized in Australia?

A Kazakh delegation of agribusinessmen familiarized themselves with farming activities in Australia, World of NAN reports with reference to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Australia has a clear separation of private and public veterinary services. The private veterinarian is responsible for inspection and treatment of livestock and works on farmers' calls. The state veterinary service is responsible for controlling safety in the country, follows requests and calls in international markets, so that farmers can export their livestock.

It is worth noting that Australia has no livestock diseases dangerous to humans to be registered with the International Epizootic Bureau. The country is absolutely safe from foot-and-mouth disease, brucellosis and anthrax. In some regions, there is a virus similar to horse rabies. Thanks to vaccination, this disease is completely manageable.

This level of biosecurity has largely been achieved through an electronic system of animal identification and traceability. Every farmer, every slaughterhouse and feedlot has its own identification numbers, to which, in turn, animal numbers are linked and all their movements are registered. Electronic tagging covers the entire Australian cattle herd, visual tagging covers the small cattle herd, but by 2025 every sheep is planned to be electronically tagged. It is very important for veterinary medicine to see every animal in the system. Then, in case of disease or other problems, it is easy to quickly isolate it.

The involvement of the state veterinary service in the farmer's activities basically ends after the farmer has registered and received identification numbers for his livestock in the traceability system. All other procedures - buying, selling, slaughtering, treatment, vaccination and others - are carried out by the farmer independently, with the involvement of a private veterinarian.

The State Veterinary Service will intervene if a tropical or other dangerous disease is suspected. The process of reporting livestock diseases is very well established: a farmer who suspects something wrong should report to a private farmer, and in case of a serious disease informs the state service.
