Since December last year, the neighboring country has imposed a ban on exports of durum wheat. This is due to a shortage of the crop and low capacity of processing plants, reports World of NAN.
In 2021-2022, the gross harvest of durum wheat in Russia amounted to 700,000 tons. Taking into account exports and the need for seeds, it was possible to load processing facilities only by 70%. And then the acute shortage of durum wheat grain was eliminated by deliveries of batches from Kazakhstan.
But farmers of the neighboring country quickly oriented themselves and in 2023 increased sown areas and harvested 1.4 million tons of durum wheat.
However, precipitation during the grain filling period in the production regions caused grain to sprout on the root in half of the farms. The grain turned out to be unsuitable for processing and, accordingly, for seed purposes.
With the total demand of the processing industry of 950 thousand tons of raw materials and a clear deficit, the country banned exports. At the same time, they do not intend to leave the problem. Therefore, Russia will soon begin to fully provide itself with durum wheat.
