Kazakhstan increased production of phosphate fertilizers

Fertilizer production in Kazakhstan in January-April 2022 amounted to 215.3 thousand tons. Almost as much as a year earlier. Of these, 147.3 thousand tons were nitrogen fertilizers. Meanwhile, production of phosphate fertilizers increased by 1.4% to 68 thousand tons, World of NAN reports with reference to energyprom.

Kazakhstan's chemical industry provided 63.7% of the demand for nitrogen fertilizers in the first quarter of this year, compared to 50.9% of last year. Nitrogen fertilizer imports decreased by 41.9% over the year, so despite the decline in production, the share of imports in total resources decreased to 36.3%. At the same time, exports of nitrogen fertilizers fell by more than 2 times, amounting to 25.8 thousand tons in January-March this year, while domestic sales fell by 9.3%, to 151 thousand tons.

At the same time, domestic producers meet the demand for phosphate fertilizers by almost 100%, while imports in the sector are insignificant. The volume of phosphate fertilizer exports remained virtually unchanged, at 1.5 thousand tons.

Prices of export supplies of fertilizers from Kazakhstan have been rising for the second year in a row. Thus, by March of this year fertilizer export prices were up 56.2% year-on-year, while a year ago prices were up 5.8%.

The prices of imported fertilizers increased even more over the past year - by 60.5% by March 2022, while a year earlier there was an increase of 11.8%.

Fertilizers are an important resource for overcoming the impending global food crisis. According to Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about 193 million people in the world were hungry in 2021 - 40 million more than in 2020.

The war in Ukraine exacerbates the situation, given that Ukraine and Russia are important players in world commodity markets, and the uncertainty caused by the conflict is causing prices to soar - especially for wheat, corn and oilseeds, as well as fertilizers. Moreover, countries that rely heavily on fertilizer imports from Russia include key exporters of grains and high-value commodities such as Argentina, Bangladesh and Brazil.

Earlier, the U.S. lifted sanctions on fertilizer imports from Russia to avoid shortages of chemicals needed for agriculture. Russia, in turn, extended restrictive quotas on mineral fertilizer exports from June to December 2022 to leave the domestic market as a priority for producers and fully meet the needs of its farmers.
