Kazakh officials refused water from Kyrgyzstan themselves

Starting from the 11 of August, Kyrgyzstan will stop supplying irrigation water to Kazakhstan, World of NAN reports with reference to agro.kg.

On July 17-19, 2023, representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan met in Bishkek to resolve water allocation issues on the Chu and Talas rivers.

The Kazakh side reported on the difficult situation in the Talas River basin with irrigation water supply to water users in Zhambyl region and requested its increase from the Kirov reservoir from July 18 to July 31 this year to 45 cubic meters per second.

The Kyrgyz side specified that according to the signed schedule the Kazakh region was to receive 40 cubic meters per second. Specialists from Kyrgyzstan warned their Kazakh colleagues that at a flow rate of 45.0 cubic meters per second by August 1 this year, Kazakhstan's share is only 3.54 million cubic meters, which at a flow rate of 10.0 cubic meters per second will be exhausted by August 4, 2023.

"Despite the given calculations and arguments, the Kazakh side did not withdraw its request. At the same time, the Kyrgyz side saved its water withdrawal limit by introducing a water rotation schedule, although Kyrgyz farmers were also in dire need of irrigation water," the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic informed.

Starting from the 11 of August, water will not be supplied to the Kazakh side. It turns out that Kazakh officials themselves agreed to cease water supply. Apparently, they wanted to curry favor with their superiors quickly and could not think in the long term.
