Kazakhstani people complained about labour conditions on British farms

In the UK, cases of violation of the rights of seasonal workers on fruit and vegetable farms have become more frequent. The problem has attracted the attention of the Committee on Horticultural Sector of the House of Lords of the British Parliament, reports World of NAN with reference to inform.kz.

In 2023, five thousand Kazakhs left for seasonal work in the UK. On average for a week on an English farm you can earn 220 thousand tenge. This is quite attractive, but labour conditions leave much to be desired.

‘We often receive complaints about living conditions, ethnic discrimination and the lack of real opportunities for transfer to another farm. There are also complaints about improper pay and high workloads. These seem to affect more workers than anything else,’ the House of Lords said.

Kazakhs, on the other hand, described constant threats and manipulation. Every day at meetings, they said, they were threatened with visa cancellation, return to their home country or fines if they failed to comply. Workers were also disrespected and kept in inhumane conditions. In general, for a good salary in a foreign land, Kazakhs had to experience all the charms of the European attitude towards guest workers.
