In Zhambyl region, Baizak, Talas and partially Zhambyl districts are experiencing irrigation water shortages, in fact, about 4,000 hectares of onions and sugar beets are at risk due to insufficient water supply, World of NAN reports with reference to the Ministry of Ecology.
The Commission confirmed the unfavorable situation on the fields due to the insufficient supply of irrigation water from the Kyrgyz Republic. The Commission will make appropriate proposals on allocation of compensation to farmers who suffered damage from the reduction of irrigation water supply from transboundary sources.
"Every year the shortage of water resources is more and more tangible and we annually bring up this issue, proposing to reduce the sowing of hydrophilous crops, to switch to moisture-saving technologies, to observe crop rotation, irrigation regimes and other reclamation measures," - said Vice-Minister of Ecology Galidulla Azidullin.
We would like to add that water from Kyrgyzstan has not been flowing through the West Big Chu Canal in Merken District for the past 4-5 years. About 10 thousand hectares of irrigated lands are stranded by this canal.
