In China, heavy rainfall during harvest resulted in very high quality losses, World of NAN reports, citing the US Department of Agriculture.
Henan Province, China's largest wheat-producing province (a quarter of all wheat), experienced six days of continuous heavy rains in late May. The rains were the heaviest in a decade. This led to overwatering, wheat germination, and mold growth.
The rains in late May and early June affected a total of more than 30 percent of China's new wheat crop in other major producing provinces, resulting in an unprecedented high percentage of germinated wheat. Because of this, there is an increasing need to import quality wheat for food production.
For China, more than 40 percent of imported wheat has recently come from Australia. Another important supplier of wheat is France.
Kazakhstan has tripled its wheat exports to China, but there is a good chance to increase exports to the other country.
