Chinese potatoes are being tested in Kostanai oblast

Nine varieties of potatoes brought from China have been planted in Kostanay region together with the Chinese side, World of NAN reports with reference to the KRU named after A. Baitursynov.

"Chinese colleagues selected seeds of crops that can grow in the conditions of our region. At the end of July, scientists from the partner university will check how the research is going," said Almabek Nugumanov, dean of the KRU Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.

The process of growing potatoes involves creating mini-tubers using a virus-free method in a test tube. After the finished fruits are planted in the fields. The plan is to introduce the most successful potato varieties to the region and grow them on a production scale.

"The trials will be conducted for three years. The aim is to identify the best of the varieties in terms of biometric and quality indicators. One of the key ones is the preservation of tubers, as in China several potato harvests are harvested in a year, while in Kazakhstan it is not cultivated in winter," explained Asiya Ansabaeva, PhD, Associate Professor at CRU.

Kostanai scientists do not rule out that the outcome of this international experiment could be the creation of fundamentally new Kazakh-Chinese potato varieties.
