Farmers oppose the reduction of cotton and rice fields

On the instructions of the Prime Minister of the country to save water resources, rice and cotton crops will be reduced in several areas of southern Kazakhstan. However, farmers are against this initiative, reports World of NAN, referring to otyrar.kz.

Now the rice fields in Turkestan region are being prepared for harvesting. This may be the last year rice will be grown here in such quantities. It planted the fields in Maktaral, Shardara and Ordabasy districts of the region. The farmers of Shardara region are against the Government's initiative to reduce the fields of water-loving crops. They say only rice, cotton and alfalfa can grow on their saline land. In addition, large farms are already set up to grow rice.

"It is profitable for our farm: we have a factory, equipment, a line was built, we produce 30 tons per day," said Yerzhan Karabayev, chairman of the farm "Saya".

There is plenty of cotton this year. In Turkestan region, farmers are harvesting 40 centners per hectare. This is a record for the region. And entrepreneurs believe that now is the right time to increase the area of cotton fields. Farmers say that it is generally inexpedient to reduce acreage: outside demand for cotton is growing. And it is more valuable: this year its price reaches 300 tenge per kilogram - twice as much as last year. It is profitable to grow it.

"Perhaps even those who grew gourds this year will grow cotton this year. It is in demand. It is connected with the fact that the demand for cotton from China has increased, there demand has increased by 24%, and in general it has influenced the increase in price this year," said Marat Kambarov, advisor to the director of "Ramazan-agro".

But this year, cotton in Turkestan region was planted on a smaller area than a year earlier, but there was more rice.

"This year rice was planted on 4.6 thousand hectares of fields. That's 700 hectares more than last year. Cotton was planted less - almost 110 thousand hectares, a year before raw cotton was planted 125 thousand hectares. But this year's cotton has had a good harvest," said Seytzhan Azbergenov, chief specialist of the Agriculture Department of Turkestan region.

It is hard to predict how much rice and cotton will decrease next year. It takes on average about three thousand liters of water to grow one kilogram of rice, and more than two and a half thousand liters for one shirt made of cotton.
