The current moratorium expires in 2023. In turn, the Ministry of Ecology intends to extend the ban on saiga shooting for another year. This was stated by the Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan Serikkali Brekeshev, reports World of NAN with reference to informburo.
"Today we sent information with a proposal to extend the moratorium. If our proposal is supported, there will be a ban on culling saigas until the end of 2023. That is, we will not shoot them next year," Serikkali Brekeshev said on the sidelines of the government.
In February 2020, the ban on the use of saigas, their parts and derivatives on the entire territory of Kazakhstan was extended until 2023, except for scientific purposes. In late June, the Ministry of Ecology announced the need to reduce the saiga population by 80,000.
"The bio-justification is finished. Scientists say that there is a need to regulate the number of saigas. It will be the Ural population. If now it counts a little more than 800 thousand heads, then about 10%, i.e. 80 thousand heads, are subject to regulation," the minister said.
The head of the Ministry of Ecology noted that it is necessary to regulate the number of saigas. He also said that saigas sometimes enter pastures and crops, which is a problem.
The news that tens of thousands of saigas are to be shot has become notorious. To recall, the situation became so heated that S. Brekeshev was severely reprimanded by the country's leadership and said that he needed funds for research on saigas and more to compensate the farmers to whom saigas had caused irreparable damage.
