State of emergency declared in western Kazakhstan

A local emergency has been declared in some districts of West Kazakhstan Oblast. The emergency zone includes Zhanibeksky, Bokeyordinsky districts, as well as several villages in Zhanakalinsky and Kaztalovsky districts, World of NAN reports with reference to 24.kz.

Due to drought and saiga invasion, farmers are unable to prepare forage reserves. Moreover, the situation was just as difficult last year.

“But then we had forage reserves from the year before last, and this year they have remained practically at zero. Usually, we collected 500-600 rolls of hay from one location, and this season we have not even collected 150. The cattle were severely depleted,” said Sayan Baetov, head of the farm.

The situation was complicated by drought. There has been almost no rain in the Bokeyordinsky and Zhanibeksky districts since the beginning of spring. The steppe antelopes have a rare grass stand. There is a shortage of pastures. According to farmers, a roll of hay now costs 10-15 thousand tenge. Moreover, you need to travel 400 kilometers to get hay.

Local authorities are aware of the problems. Based on the conclusion of Kazhydromet, a state of emergency has been partially declared in the region. As support, 22 thousand tenge of subsidies will be paid for each breeding stock of cattle. More than three thousand is due for small cattle, and 8 thousand tenge for mares. Local farmers will also be compensated for transportation costs for the delivery of hay from other regions. Private farmsteads will also be compensated for the costs of transporting hay.
