The volume of feed wheat in storage increased 4 times

Statistics on availability of grains and legumes in Kazakhstan as of November 1 has been updated. Most of the crops have been harvested almost completely. Now it is interesting to look at the quality of the harvest and summarize some first results, World of NAN reports.

The Agriculture Ministry recently reported that 11.4 million tons of wheat had been threshed. As a result, yields are down by about 29% compared to 2022. A month ago, we predicted that this year's wheat harvest would drop by 25%.

As a result, there are 16.9 million tons of grain in "storage" at the beginning of November, down about 13% from last year. The result seems to be not so bad, as it is the 2nd highest figure for the last 5 years. But the quality of grains has noticeably decreased. Every fourth grain in the storages falls under the category of "fodder". Such a high share of fodder grain has not been seen in all 11 years of publication of these statistics.

Separately for wheat the situation was somewhat worse. "Warehouse" stocks fell by 16% y/y to 13.2 million tons. But food wheat stocks fell by 29%, which is exactly in line with the figures announced by the Ministry of Agriculture. Stocks stand at 9.88 million tons, just below the weak 2021 figure and the second worst result in at least 11 years. It's worth noting that the share of feed wheat in storage is 19%, compared to an average of 5% over the previous 10 years. Stocks of feed wheat for the year increased from 621 thousand tons to 2.6 million tons, which indicates big problems with the quality of wheat.

The situation is different for other crops. For rice, buckwheat and millet, stocks for the year rose by 40%, 18% and 10% respectively. On the other hand, corn stocks fell by 17% y/y, rye by 25% and oats by 23%.
