A farmer from Turkestan region told yujanka.kz about the problems of selling sheep wool. According to him, for a good merino wool the market offers mere pennies, reports World of NAN.
Sapa-2002 LLP specializes in the reproduction of Kazakh Kurdish coarse-wool sheep. The farm owns a modern fattening complex for 10,000 sheep, including Kazakh merino sheep.
"In the collective farm named after Lenin, on the basis of which "Sapa-2002" LLP appeared, there were only Kazakh merino sheep in the flock. At that time, their wool, which was as good as Australian merino wool, was highly valued. Many industrial processors lined up for it. From above we were given a plan for the production of this natural raw material, which we had to fulfill. They charged us for failure to meet it," said Nurzhan Orynbayev, a zootechnician of the farm.
And now the LLP does not know where to put the merino wool.
"We used to sell it for 1,000 tenge per kilo. Then the price dropped to 200 tenge. China took it all. And now that price does not suit us. A shearing of one animal costs 400 tenge. It makes no sense to sell at a loss," the zootechnician added.
Earlier merino wool was in good demand. Now there is almost no processing in the country, though the government heavily subsidizes this industry and even puts up barriers to the export of wool and skins. But so far no one has occupied this niche, and high-quality raw materials are rotting in the ground.
