Specialists of Kazvodkhoz in Atyrau region directed flood water through the Oyil River to irrigate more than 18,000 hectares of hayfields in the region, World of NAN reports with reference to the Ministry of Water Resources.
As a result, the water level in the Oyil River has decreased. Work is also underway to redirect flood waters from the Zhaiyk River to irrigation systems, estuaries and the Caspian Sea.
The channel of the Saryozek canal, which receives flood waters, has been cleaned and the protective dam has been strengthened. A new canal 4.2 kilometres long was dug in the lower part of the canal, and 1,500 hectares of hayfields in the Erkinkala rural district near the city of Atyrau were irrigated. Floodwaters are also channelled through the Saryozek canal into the Caspian Sea.
Pipelines and dams along the Baksai Canal have been removed for the safe passage of flood waters. A new canal 4 kilometres long was dug to divert water to the sea, and the head part of the Naryn canal was cleaned. Today, 4.5 hectares of hayfields located along the canal are being irrigated with flood waters.
"One of the main tasks for today is effective utilisation of flood waters. More than 1 billion cubic metres of water has been sent through the Zhaiyk River to the Caspian Sea. Also, the passage of water to fill lakes, estuaries and groundwater deposits continues," said Moldir Abdualiyeva, the official representative of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
