Almost 10 million tons of wheat are reported to be short by Kazakh farmers

At a government meeting, Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov said that farmers are short about 10 million tons of wheat annually because of insufficient fertilizer application, World of NAN reports.

According to the head of the government, the volume of fertilizer application in the country is 26% of the scientific need. At the same time, there are 12 fertilizer plants in the country, and the state subsidizes the purchase of these products by farmers.

"It is necessary to direct all these productions, first of all, towards the domestic market. According to experts, because of the lack of mineral fertilizers in the fields, our farmers annually underharvest about 10 million tons of high-quality wheat. That's nearly half of our harvest," Alikhan Smailov said.

There are also losses from soil degradation and weed infestation on the fields. In addition, mechanisms for reducing the area of water-intensive crops have not been worked out well enough, no proper explanatory work has been carried out among farmers, and no alternative options for future activities have been proposed. In this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture, together with other government agencies and regional akimats were instructed to intensify work in this direction.
