Water supply will be improved on 74 thousand hectares of irrigated land

The country's 15 reservoirs will be reconstructed under a plan developed by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, reports World of NAN citing the ministry.

Reconstruction of these reservoirs will improve water supply to 74,000 hectares of irrigated land.

"After 3 months on the job, I visited 10 provinces of the country and inspected reservoirs and other important water infrastructure facilities. Many hydraulic structures are operated without major repairs and reconstruction from 30 to more than 50 years and therefore are objects of increased danger. The most difficult situation is at some structures that are in municipal and private ownership," Water Resources Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov explained the reason for reconstruction.

In addition to repairing existing facilities, the department's plan also calls for the construction of 20 new reservoirs with a capacity of 2.4 km³ in 9 regions of Kazakhstan. Implementation of the plan will increase the volume of water resources by 3.7 km³, expand the area of irrigated land to 2.2 million hectares, reduce annual losses of irrigation water and increase its volume by 3 km³.
