The government will not introduce an export duty on grain

Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin clarified the situation with rumors about the introduction of an export duty on grain, World of NAN reports.

"The most important thing is that the issue of introducing an export duty on grain is not on the government's agenda. The government regularly considers a variety of scenarios and ways to increase budget revenues. The proposals of the Ministry of Finance to introduce export customs duties on certain types of raw materials must be analyzed for economic feasibility and compliance with Kazakhstan's international obligations under the ETP. And the results of the analysis are subject to consideration at the Interdepartmental Commission on Trade, with the mandatory participation of the interested business community," the Deputy Prime Minister wrote on Facebook.

Kazakhstan produces about 19-21 million tons of grain annually, of which the domestic market consumes 9-10 million tons. That is, annual production is almost twice the need of the domestic market. The remaining volumes of grain are exported. In case of introduction of export duty, there is a risk of loss of markets and the government understands this.

"This year we expect a good grain harvest, higher than last year. At the same time, about 3-4 million tons of wheat from last year remain in warehouses and elevators. We are interested in increasing wheat exports and selling the remaining grain as soon as possible," concluded Serik Zhumangarin.
