Spending on food continues to overtake the income of Kazakhstanis

In the first quarter of 2024, each average Kazakh spent on food and non-alcoholic beverages 131.3 thousand tg, which is 6.7% more than a year earlier, reports World of NAN with reference to finprom.kz.

For comparison: in the first quarter of last year, spending on food and beverages averaged 123.1 thousand tg per capita, and annual growth reached a remarkable 21.1%. One third of all expenditures went to meat and meat products: 43.3 thousand tg per capita, 6.4% more than a year earlier.

Bread products and cereals (20.5 thousand tg per capita, up 8.6% over the year) and dairy products (14.5 thousand tg, up 7.7%) also accounted for significant spending. Fruit (11.6 thousand tg per capita per quarter) and vegetables (8.9 thousand tg) were also among the top five most expensive food categories.

On sugar, confectionery and sweets Kazakhstanis spent an average of 8.7 thousand tg per person per quarter, on oils and fats - 6.7 thousand tg, on fish and seafood - 5.9 thousand tg, on soft drinks - 5.8 thousand tg, on eggs - 3.3 thousand tg.

In general, at the end of the first quarter of this year, prices for goods and services increased by 9.3% over the year, for food products - by 7.5%, and directly for food and non-alcoholic beverages - by 7.2%.
