Fish farming is gaining popularity in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is seeing strong growth in fish farming production figures. For the period from 2018 to 2022, aquaculture stocks in the country have more than tripled: from 5.7 thousand to 19.2 thousand tons, reports World of NAN with reference to Energyprom.kz.

Businesses have become interested in this sphere, as the industry began to receive government support. For example, for fish farms, taxes were reduced by 70%, they can count on compensation for 25% of investments, as well as a subsidy of 30% of the cost of feed and 50% of the cost of buying fry, medicines or breeding stock of valuable fish species.

The fact that the business community has become interested in commercial fish farming is confirmed by the dynamics of financial injections into aquaculture. In January-November 2023, investments in fixed assets in the field of fisheries and aquaculture increased 2.4 times (20.2 billion tenge) to the same period of the previous year.

The main fish farming regions of the country are Turkestan region and East Kazakhstan region. Fish farmers in these two regions in 2022 grew products worth 7.4 billion tenge.

Aquaculture businessmen use different types of water bodies. Of the 380 fish farms in 2022, the majority (74.2%) belonged to lake-commodity farms, 18.4% to pond farms, and 2.9% to cage farms.

However, according to statistics, it is in pond and cage farms that fish was raised for the largest amount: 7.3 billion tenge (with the total figure for Kazakhstan being 11.1 billion tenge).
