Natural disasters cause an average of 400 agricultural loss emergencies per year, their frequency has quadrupled since the 1970s, World of NAN reports, citing a UN report.
Over the past 30 years, agricultural and livestock losses due to natural disasters have totaled about $3.8 trillion, an average loss of $123 billion a year, or 5 percent of annual global agricultural GDP.
In 1970, the number of agricultural disasters did not exceed 100. However, over the past 20 years, the number of adverse events has risen to 400 per year. Rising temperatures, moisture deficits and floods affect agrifood systems in many dimensions, jeopardizing food security and undermining the resilience of the agricultural sector.
According to the UN, natural disasters have caused the greatest relative damage to low-income and lower-middle-income countries, accounting for 10 to 15% of their total agricultural GDP.
