The damage caused by the raids of a million saigas in West Kazakhstan Region has been estimated at 8 billion tenge. Farmers are asking the Ministry of Ecology to regulate the number of the steppe antelopes, World of NAN reported citing 24.kz.
Bauyrzhan Sabanov, a resident of Zhanibek District, sowed 400 hectares of land with fodder crops this year. But steppe antelopes destroyed most of the crop.
"Today we have a critical situation with farmers in almost 6 districts lacking fodder. 8 billion tenge is needed. The Ministry of Agriculture does not solve the problems with wild animals, we suffer from their raids", - shared Bauyrzhan Sabanov.
According to the expert commission's calculations, the animals have trampled more than a million hectares of pastures and devastated 5,000 hectares of crops. Fodder harvesting was jeopardized in several districts of the region at once.
"International experts came to visit us, with whom we worked together on reducing the conflict between agriculture and wildlife, in particular saigas. Therefore, the international experts made a number of recommendations in this area. These issues are currently being worked on. The issues related to the development of specific mechanisms for the sustainable management of the saiga population," promises Zulfiya Suleimenova, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Every year farmers have the same problem. And judging by the evasive answer of the Minister of Ecology, the state is in no hurry to solve it. After all, they are not the ones who lose billions of tenge and they are not the ones who have to think about what to feed their cattle in winter.
