Meat prices can be lowered by creating conditions for cattle breeding

According to Yerbol Yeseneyev, acting deputy chairman of Atameken, not much meat is produced in Kazakhstan, so there is competition in the local market. However, if favorable conditions are created for cattle breeding, it is possible even to reduce its cost, World of NAN reports with reference to the NCE.

"We have tremendous potential to build up quality meat in the country. If we actually create a favorable environment for the livestock industry, we can even expect the cost to go down. Because right now, unfortunately, we don't produce that much meat, so there's a certain amount of competition in the local market. And we are now eating meat for four to five dollars. In the case of Mongolia, where there is much more per capita, almost 20 times more cattle than we have, and, naturally, the price of meat is even cheaper. The cheapest meat in the world is red lamb, horse meat, beef in Mongolia costing only three dollars. That adds up to 1,400-1,500 tenge in our money," the expert said.

Yerbol Yeseneyev noted that there are many figures that do not really coincide. But in general, if we talk about meat, Kazakhstan produces about 1.2-1.3 million tons of meat.

"We produce and consume the main mass, about 95%. Yes, there is a small overflow, that is, about 6 tons of meat we import from Brazil, Argentina. It goes mainly for processing. And about 18 thousand tons of meat we export, that is, it is mainly the market of Central Asia, Uzbekistan. They have no other alternative. Therefore, I believe that the situation is actually not critical. We are 100% self-sufficient. Not only that, but we can increase this production many times over, and we have a huge potential. If we talk about red meat, of course we will almost triple the number of sheep to 50 million, "- said Yerbol Yeseneyev.

The expert said that, unambiguously, the livestock industry is almost the most promising in Kazakhstan.

"If we talk about the sector of agriculture. Because, first of all, we can occupy a large number of people in this industry in the countryside. We can establish deep processing. The current redistribution does not suit us. Just produce a meat carcass and then sell it. Although there are a lot of derivatives: bone processing, leather processing, wool processing. These are all derivatives of the meat industry," he said.
