A harmful mutation was revealed in a Kazakh horse breed

The scientists of KazNAIU for the first time in the country have revealed heterozygous carriers of a harmful mutation in horses of Pavlodar region by using molecular-genetic methods, World of NAN reports referring to the university.

At the end of March 2023 PhD student of the department of "Obstetrics, surgery and reproduction biotechnology" Muslimova Zh. U. for the first time detected heterozygous carriers of mutations in horses of the breed Toad of Pavlodar region. Heterozygous genotype was detected in two mares aged 4-5 years out of 16 DNA tested horses of Pavlodar region, which is 12,5%.

Identification of heterozygous individuals indicates that there are heterozygous carriers of the harmful mutation in domestic breeds. This mutation is harmful, since it is accompanied by abortions and stillbirths. Therefore, Kazakh scientists consider it necessary to conduct genetic screening of horses of all breeds in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The spread of the mutation can cause great economic damage to breeding and commodity horse breeding.

According to scientists, horses remain poorly studied objects, and due to the increase in their population in Kazakhstan, the development of molecular genetic diagnostic methods is an urgent problem of veterinary science.
