Scientists have found a new feedstock for bioenergy

China is facing a problem in the form of coal shortage. As an alternative, scientists have proposed the Idesia polycarpa tree, which not only can serve as a fuel, but also prevents soil erosion, World of NAN reports with reference to mdpi.com.

Traditionally, crops such as maize, sugarcane or rapeseed have been used in bioenergy. However, Chinese authorities are against them because they cannot allow fertile land to be given up for fuel.

And Idesia polycarpa, a deciduous tree species belonging to the willow family and the tribe Flacourtiaceae, is known for its fast growth and extensive root system. The plant is drought tolerant and can thrive in poor soil conditions, effectively preventing soil erosion.

A perennial woody non-food oilseed crop, it is characterised by high yield and quality. Its oil fruits can be used as lubricant, emulsifier, desiccant and material for biodiesel. In other words, the plant is versatile in its economic value and is able to grow on land that has no agricultural value.
