A unique vegetable is grown by an African near Almaty

Coulibaly Tidgu has been actively farming near Almaty for five years, growing sweet potatoes. This special vegetable is not known in Kazakhstan, and the farmer hopes to popularize it, World of NAN reports with reference to stan.kz.

Coulibaly, from Mali, has lived in Kazakhstan for more than 20 years. He came here to study, settled and married a Kazakh woman. Coulibaly himself is an agronomist, so growing sweet potato in Almaty has not been a problem for him.

The yam is similar in characteristics to the potato and has its own peculiarities. Depending on the method of preparation, it can be similar to different vegetables. It is added to porridge, a thick soup is prepared, mashed potatoes and soufflés can also be made.

"My nephews sent tubers of sweet potatoes from Mali. That was five years ago. Gradually I increased the amount of vegetables. There are not many varieties of sweet potatoes. I chose the Bellevue variety to plant here. It is said to be from New Orleans. Bellevue tubers are soft and beautiful. This variety is very fruity and tasty," said the farmer.

In the first year of planting, only five willows came out. This year, the harvest has increased significantly. The farmer plans to harvest half a ton of sweet potatoes. In the future, Coulibaly dreams of turning his hobby into a business.

"I will start my business and hire workers when I feel people need it. If possible, I will sell in bulk to regular buyers. I noticed that yams are sold on the internet for 2800 tenge per kg. They bring them from China," he said.
