26 new vegetable storage facilities will open this year

In 2023, 26 new vegetable storage facilities with a total capacity of 104.5 thousand tons will open in Kazakhstan, and there will be another 35 modern warehouses in the country by 2026. They will join the list of the republic's 1,208 storage facilities with a capacity of 1.9 million tonnes, World of NAN reports, citing the Ministry of Agriculture.

In recent years, Kazakhstan has experienced a shortage of vegetable storage facilities, and the problem is particularly apparent during the off-season. Therefore, the country has developed a comprehensive plan for the construction and modernisation of storage facilities, which would create at least 97 warehouses for horticultural products with a capacity of 335,600 tonnes. The work is being done ahead of schedule. For example, in 2021 and 2022, compared with the planned 36 projects for 181.5 thousand tons, 37 vegetable storage facilities that can take up to 200.8 thousand tons of products were opened.

The issue of expanding storage infrastructure and upgrading existing vegetable storage facilities for Kazakhstan is of particular importance, given the growth of vegetable yields. In 2022, farmers harvested 4.1m tonnes of potatoes, 621,400 tonnes of carrots, 1.1m tonnes of onions and about 552 tonnes of cabbage. The creation of infrastructure for their storage will help to make up for the lost income of villagers, reduce import dependence, as well as stabilize the prices of products for the end consumer in the off-season.

To attract investments in the creation and modernization of storages the Plan envisages the increase of investment subsidy rate from 25% to 40-50% in the construction of modern storages with special equipment, providing long-term storage of products with preservation of their commodity qualities.
