In which regions did farmers suffer the most in 2023?

In past reviews, World of NAN's editorial analyst has written that some of the most affected major crops were wheat, barley and oilseeds. Today, let's take a look at how much the gross harvest of these crops has fallen regionally.

In terms of wheat, Pavlodar region suffered the most from the top 10 regions, where gross harvest in weight after tillage fell from 661 thousand to 268 thousand tons or by 59%, which is much higher than the national indicator of 26%. Also particularly notable is Akmola Region, where wheat harvest fell by 40% in 2023. This region was the main driver of the harvest decline in absolute values: the harvest fell by 1.85 million tons. This is 43% of the total for the whole country. While other top regions in North Kazakhstan region and Kostanai showed a much less catastrophic decline: 17% and 21% respectively.

For barley, Zhambyl region showed the greatest decline with a result of -45%. Gross harvest decreased from 378 thousand to 208 thousand tons. Most likely, the drought was a factor. Akmola Region, where barley harvest fell from 620 to 385 thousand tons or 38%. It is interesting to note that in Kostanai region barley harvest increased by 1%.

However, this was mostly due to the increase in the sown area, as the yield per hectare fell by 19%. Also, the increase in area slightly offset the weak yields in North Kazakhstan region, where the harvest fell by 15%.

In terms of oilseeds, the northern regions represented by Pavlodar (-43%), North Kazakhstan (-41%) and Kostanai regions (-38%) also showed the largest decrease. The deepest in absolute value gross harvest decline was in North Kazakhstan region, by 306 thousand tons, which is more than a third of the total decline in Kazakhstan. It is interesting to note that in Abai region gross yield increased by 20%, and in Zhetysu region gross yield fell by 17%, but this happened only due to a decrease in sown areas.
