In Kazakhstan, the situation in seed breeding is catastrophic

According to Vice-Minister of Agriculture Yerbol Taszhurekov, the country's seed breeding system is broken, and enterprises operating in this sector are fragmented, World of NAN reports, citing the government.

Kazakhstan has a high import dependence on seeds of corn, fruit, berry and nut crops, as well as on rye, vegetables, melons, potatoes and sugar beets.

"For them, the provision of seeds of domestic selection is less than 10%. Under changing climatic conditions, the domestic system of breeding and seed production cannot provide farmers with varieties resistant to diseases and stress situations," the Vice Minister added.

Another serious problem is extremely low training and staff renewal. There is practically no inflow of young specialists, the average age of domestic breeders is 61 years.

The Ministry of Agriculture has formed a comprehensive plan, including 15 measures. These include equipping the laboratory base of agrarian universities with modern equipment; personnel training, joint work of NASEC with foreign research institutes to develop varieties and hybrids of major crops; creation of a national gene pool of plants, a digital platform for traceability of seeds, planting material and a number of other activities.
