Cattle breeders in West Kazakhstan Oblast want to draw attention to livestock deaths in the region, but local authorities have banned them from holding a peaceful rally, World of NAN reports.
The problem is particularly acute in four districts: Zhanakala, Bokey Orda, Kaztalovka and Zhanibek. According to farmers' reports, in these districts, the famine has killed an average of 50 to 70 head of livestock per farm. And the number of bankrupt farmers is increasing every year.
There are several reasons for livestock mortality and bankruptcy. The first is the degradation of pastures; on average, farmers harvest four times less hay. The second is price dumping, with cheap products from Russia entering the markets. The third is the growing population of saigas, which are destroying pasture fodder.
If the state does not intervene, livestock farmers in the west will face a sad outcome. In order to prevent this, the farmers have prepared a petition outlining ways of solving their problems. Thus, the farmers ask: to declare a state of emergency in four districts of the region; to subsidise the slaughter of livestock by 20%; to provide fodder; and to reduce the number of saigas.
However, nobody wants to listen to the farmers, and the local authorities even banned the peaceful rally on the pretext of holding another event. Therefore, the cattle breeders decided to launch a petition, which is now going through the moderation stage. The World of NAN editorial board will follow the situation and contact the regional Akimat.
