2020 was a critical year in terms of food security and humanitarian crisis - OSCE PA meeting

Deputy Chairman of the Senate Askar Shakirov took part in the meeting of the Standing Committee of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the World of NAN reports with reference to the press service of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan.

During the meeting, which was held by videoconference, the Chairman of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly George Tsereteli and its Secretary General Roberto Montella were informed about the current activities of the organization in the conditions of coronavirus pandemic.

As a Key Speaker, David Beasley, Executive Director of the UN World Food Program (WFP), who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020, spoke about food shortages in low-income countries, which are exacerbated by the spread of COVID-19.

"2020 was the most critical year in terms of food security and humanitarian crisis since World War II. Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, the number of people on the verge of hunger has increased from 135 million to 270 million". - David Beesley noted.

The WFP Executive Director urged countries to address other aspects of the impact of COVID-19, in particular the need to strike a balance between health and food shortage issues.
