2024 could be the hottest year on record

This year may become the hottest in history if the current solar cycle peaks and the El Niño phenomenon lasts no more than a year and a half or two years, World of NAN reports citing ria.ru.

The El Niño phenomenon is characterized by an anomalous increase in temperature on the surface of the water in the equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean.

"It's hard to say, maybe and indeed 2024 will be the hottest. El Niño began in the early summer of 2023. If it lasts a year and a half to two years, it will end in mid-2025. This means that if 2024 falls entirely under El Niño, then maybe it will be the warmest," said climatologist Alexei Kokorin.

Another factor that could influence record temperatures in 2024 is solar activity.

"The peak of the 11-year cycle of the Sun is likely to be precisely in 2024. Its influence is tentatively three to four times less than the influence of El Niño, but nevertheless, it is there," the climatologist added.
