More than 29 million hectares of agricultural land are unfit for farming

Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerbol Karashukeyev said that about 798.4 thousand hectares of land in the country are saline, reports World of NAN.

Last year, the structure of the hydrogeological and land reclamation service was optimized. According to the results of work about 1.4 million hectares are considered as good, 545,4 thousand hectares - as satisfactory and 366,2 thousand hectares - as unsatisfactory, or 16% of total irrigated area.

 Areas of saline lands amounted to 798,4 thousand ha, including 133,6 thousand ha with high degree of salinization. For the most part, saline lands are located in Kyzylorda, Turkestan, Almaty, Zhambyl and Zhetysu regions.

"Currently, due to erosion, 29.3 million hectares are actually not suitable for further use. At the same time, soil surveys of agricultural land are conducted annually on an area of 5 to 7 million hectares in order to determine the qualitative characteristics of the soil," Yerbol Karashukeyev added.
