FAO in favor of digital technologies for the transformation of agrifood systems

FAO calls for bridging the digital divide as part of the necessary transformation of agrifood systems. The widespread use of digital technology, especially in rural areas, could help address multiple market failures and help smallholders enter markets, according to Director General Qu Dongyu, cited by the FAO World of NAN.

The head of the organization also reaffirmed FAO's commitment to partnering to build more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems to improve production, nutrition, the environment and quality of life so as to leave no one behind. And in order to achieve such transformation, digital technologies are needed.

Qu Dongyu cited examples of FAO's work to help accelerate digitalization in the food and agriculture sectors, and to promote digitalization in rural areas.

Qu Dongyu also highlighted the fight against hunger and poverty through digital technologies. For example, the FAO's "1,000 Digital Villages" initiative aims to turn 1,000 villages around the world into digital hubs to promote the transformation of agrifood systems.

The initiative focuses on three main areas: "e-agriculture" to improve agricultural productivity through the adoption of ICT and digital solutions, particularly climate-smart practices, as well as precision farming and smart agricultural infrastructure management practices; "digital services for farmers" to improve farmers' access to services, including financial services, social protection and employment mechanisms; and digital services to "transform rural areas" to improve the delivery of public

The FAO also acts as a platform for a wide range of partners in the use of digital technologies in the food and agriculture industry. In this regard, FAO's soon-to-be-launched International Platform on Digital Food and Agriculture will provide a platform for dialogue, develop policy directions and strengthen links between agricultural and digital economy fora. This will help governments achieve greater benefits from digitalization in agriculture, qualitative breakthroughs by sharing knowledge with peers, and address potential challenges.
