Kazakhstan is losing markets in Central Asia, but is working to increase supplies to China, World of NAN reports with reference to lsm.kz.
The last two or three years have seen heightened competition in Kazakhstan's traditional markets for wheat and processed products - Central Asia.
"We usually ship up to 5 million tons there. But because of the competition, which has now intensified, since April we have been actively working on opening the Chinese market. The main constraining issue is infrastructure, i.e. throughput capacity," explained Samat Tenbayev, deputy chairman of Prodkorporatsiya NC.
Since the beginning of the year, 500 thousand tons of Kazakh wheat has been shipped to China. The short-term goal is to increase the volume of exports to one million tons. Generallya, China can potentially buy from Kazakhstan up to 3.5 million tons.
