Large retail chains are ready to buy onions from farmers

Following the results of negotiations between the Ministry of Trade and 16 large retail chains in Kazakhstan, retail chains Small, "Semeiniy" and "Yarmarka Retail" expressed interest in buying part of the volume of onions directly from farmers, the World of NAN reports with reference to the agency.

In turn, a representative of the network Toimart said that a contract for the supply of onions from Shengeldy has already been signed.

In 2023, Kazakhstan harvested 1.1 million tons of onions. Over the past five years, there has been an increase in the onion harvest by 23% or 211.8 thousand tons, which led to overproduction.

Currently, the average price for onions in Kazakhstan in retail trade is 99 tg/kg. The wholesale price for onions at the market "Altyn Orda" varies from 40-50 per good quality onion. In retail chains - from 58 to 140 tenge/kg.

Last December, businessmen from Afghanistan and Pakistan offered farmers in Zhambyl and Almaty regions 80 tenge/kg. However, farmers rejected large deals, as they expected higher prices. In January, a meeting was held in Konayev with onion growers in Shengeldy village, Almaty region, where Afghan businessmen offered to take the maximum possible volume of onions at 40 tenge per kg.

However, the parties did not agree on the price. Farmers were also offered 100 free places at the Altyn Orda market to sell their onions. However, they were unable to sell it at the market.

Now, given the current situation with significant onion balances of farmers in Zhambyl and Almaty regions, four retail chains will buy onions directly from producers.
