Farmers who do not save water will receive less subsidies.

Agriculture Minister Aidarbek Saparov spoke about how the ministry will encourage farmers to save water, reports World of NAN with reference to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Kazakhstan has more than 2.3 million hectares of irrigated land, but by the end of 2023, of the 1.5 million hectares of actually irrigated land, 75% is irrigated by furrow irrigation, 6% by flooding of rice fields, and 21% is under modern drip irrigation or sprinkling.

"To encourage farmers to apply modern water-saving technologies, the Rules for subsidizing the cost of water supply services have been amended. Now the number of subsidies will depend on the method of irrigation. That is, when irrigating without the use of water-saving technologies regardless of the method of water supply is subsidized - 50-75% of the tariff, and with the use of water-saving technologies - 60-85%. But by 2026, for those who do not save water, compensation will be reduced to 30-55% depending on the tariff," Aidarbek Saparov said.

Currently, the Ministry is working on the issue of increasing the norm of subsidizing the costs of purchasing and installing water-saving technologies from 50 to 80%, where 30% will be subsidized from the local budget.
