63 billion tenge will be allocated for the development of seed production

The government has approved a Comprehensive Plan for the development of selection and seed production of agricultural crops in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2024 – 2028, World of NAN reports.

Currently, the domestic breeding and seed production system cannot provide farmers with varieties that are tolerant and resistant to diseases and stress situations. And the share of elite seeds in the total sown area of ​​the country is 7.1%, which is 2 times less than in Russia and Belarus.

The implementation of the Comprehensive Plan will make it possible to improve the legislative and regulatory framework for selection and seed production, update the material and technical base of selection and seed production entities, create favorable conditions for the influx of young personnel into the field, build a coherent seed production system, as well as develop and implement a digital seed traceability system.

The total costs for the implementation of the Comprehensive Plan will be 63.4 billion tenge. The implementation of the plan will allow by 2028 to develop and submit for variety testing 108 new varieties and hybrids of agricultural crops, of which 33 varieties and hybrids of grains, 10 varieties of legumes, 16 varieties and hybrids of oilseeds and cereals, 17 varieties and hybrids of potatoes and vegetable crops. Also 8 varieties of fruit, berry crops and grapes, 21 varieties and hybrids of forage crops.

As part of the plan, the share of use of elite domestic seeds of priority crops will be increased from 7.5% to 14.4%.

Overall, the plan looks very positive on paper. However, domestic agricultural science has long lost confidence. And whether such an amount of money will solve a problem that has been developing for decades is a big question.
